Grandparent

DNA Testing.

If a possible father is not available for paternity testing, a Grandparent test can confirm a family relationship instead. One or both paternal grandparents can participate.

Is She Really our Grandchild?

Do you want to confirm a biological relationship with a grandchild? When a possible father isn’t available for paternity testing, one or more of his parents can participate instead. The child’s mother is encouraged to add her DNA to the test as well since it helps to expedite analysis and can strengthen results. Whether you just want to know for your own peace of mind or obtain a report for legal reasons, we provide the accurate answers you need to know. The report is posted to your secure online account 5 business days after all samples have been received at the lab.

A grandparentage test is performed to determine a child’s relationship to the alleged father’s family when the alleged father is unavailable or unwilling and no post-mortem sample is available. By comparing the DNA patterns of both paternal grandparents with the child, we can determine a “probability of grandparentage.”

Who needs to be tested?

  • One (1) Mother, one (1) Child, and both Paternal Parents (Mother [PM] and Father [PF] of the Alleged Father [AF])

Turnaround Time

  • Five (5) business days from receipt of all samples

Chain-of-Custody Requirements

Chain-of-custody requirements must be fulfilled for test results to be defensible in any legal situation, such as inheritance disputes. These requirements include the following:

  • Samples are collected by a neutral third party, such as a clinic or laboratory

  • The individuals tested are positively identified (i.e., they present a government-issued ID to be photocopied and/or they are photographed and fingerprinted)

  • A standard kit is used

  • Each party completes and signs a Client Identification and Consent Form (COC-4002)

  • Guardianship of tested minor must be verified at the time of signing consent

  • The kit may not be in the possession of the clients prior to or after being collected

Non-Chain-of-Custody Requirements

In a non-chain-of-custody test, samples are collected by the patients themselves. Results of this test are for personal knowledge only and may not be used for legal purposes.

  • An in-home kit is used, and buccal samples can be collected by the patients themselves at a time and place of their choosing

  • Since the origin of the samples cannot be verified, names are listed on the report in the same way they are labeled on the samples

  • A unique barcode is assigned to each kit and appears on the report as a reference for the case

Notes

  • We strongly encourage the mother to participate so we can account for one-half of the child’s genetic material, which she passed along to the child
